my sister went out on a date tonight my whole family made sure her outfit looked right I watched as she ran around the house, so scared and as he picked her up, I thought "now this ain't fair" what am I gonna wear tonight? how should I fix my hair tonight? her dress was red, her curfew ten he knocked on the door like a gentleman he met mom and dad, i watched from the stairs and as they left the house, I thought "now this ain't fair" what am I gonna wear tonight? how should I fix my hair tonight? will I ever know what it feels like to go? what am I gonna wear tonight? how should I fix my hair tonight?

Boy loves me so much he turned off his phone Boy loves me so much he left me alone Boy loves me so much he got overwhelmed Boy loves me so much, he couldn’t be found Boy loves me so much (Sha la la la la la, look at me) He loves me so much! (Sha la la la, happy as can be) Boy loves me so much (Sha la la la la la, finally free) He loves me so much (Now that I got a boy in love with me!) Boy loves me so much, he promised his soul Boy loves me so much, I’m not letting go Boy loves me so much, he just disappeared Boy loves me so much, I dried all my tears Boy loves me so much (Sha la la la la la, on my knees!) Boy loves me so much (Stop making this so very hard for me!) Boy loves me so much (I want my baby in bed with me) Boy loves me so much (His whereabouts are a mystery) Sha la la la la la, on my knees Stop making this so very hard for me I want my baby here in bed with me His whereabouts are a mystery Boy loves me so much, it just isn’t fair Boy loves me so much that he’s unaware.

You did a number on me, you did a number on me I gotta be seen to be believed, cause you did a number on me. Mama’s Sunday School is praying for me; she hasn't heard from me in weeks. Friends try to take me out for a drink, but my dark room's become sanctuary; Cause you used to be here too, I used to be with you. And no matter how dark the room, my heart would shine for two. You’re right, I’ll be fine. In my next life, I’ll be fine. But for this time, I’m just slowing dying Til my time finally comes, Cause you were my number one. You did a number on me, you did a number on me I wear your pajamas in the street, put out your cigarettes in my sheets This feels like my end. Please God, let this be the end. You’re always right, I’ll be fine In my next life, maybe I’ll be fine. But for this time, I’ll be slowing dying Til my time finally comes Cause you are my only one.

You, you lost me. How did you lose me When I was just two steps behind you? You, you replaced me. How did you erase me When I wrote in permanent marker? Permanent marker, permanent marker, permanent marker How did my life get to this point, We all ask ourselves. How did my life get to this point, I need some help. You, you lost me. How did you lose me? I kept myself just two steps behind you. You, you replaced me. How did you erase me When I wrote in permanent marker? Permanent marker, permanent marker, permanent marker.

so you wanna leave me here this way, with my replacement smiling? clearly I should look away, but the pain is kinda satisfying cause living this life so free can sometimes get so tiring. breathe through the spell you cast on me, I promise I'll keep trying. but did you know that you were it for me? I wanted you to meet my family how magical that feels, after all these years how magical that feels, after all these years (did you feel it?) my hand was getting tired when you walked through the door of my life, my baby top rated, all time, click click rewind, click click you're mine shut down the screen, put down the drink it's finally happening your spell manifesting how magical that feels, after all these years how magical that feels, after all these years (did you know that you were it for me? i wanted you to meet my family) pray to God I ever see your face again pray to God I ever see your face again swear to God you'll never see my face again how magical that feels, after all these years how magical that feels, after all these years

It's exhausting becoming exhausted, To have things go as they should, But just as they should, You've quit praying for me, babe You've quit praying for me, babe You've quit praying for me, babe You've quit praying for me, babe. It's disheartening losing your heart, Day after day, the bus on its way. It's tiring becoming so tired, Walls caving in, no more ink in the pen. You've quit praying for me, babe You've quit praying for me, babe You've quit praying for me, babe You've quit praying for me, babe. So what do I do to get back in your good graces? I never knew that I could feel the difference, The difference is under my skin - Cause you've quit praying for me, babe You've quit praying for me, babe You've quit praying for me, babe You've quit praying for me, babe. You've quit praying for me, babe You've quit praying for me, babe. Don't quit praying for me, babe, Don't quit praying for me, babe.

Intoxicate me, cause I'm sober now. I need a reason to get out this house. Ain't much to do in this part of town, But if you pick me up I promise I'll sneak out. And we'll drive way, we'll drive away. We're driving through the storm together, The pavement, you can hardly see. We're moving to the next town over, They've got a bar where we can be. Forget the ones we left behind, They don't get to chase us down. We'll find some day jobs to pass the time, To make some night money we'll throw around. And we'll settle down, we'll settle down. We're driving through the storm together, The pavement, you can hardly see. We're moving to the next town over, They've got a bar where we can be. And we're singing, and we're screaming, And we're dancing, you and me, we're free.

Your stepmom drives you to school, but you’ve got nothing to talk about, So you hop on the bus, now you’ve got something to complain about. They call you a faggot every day, a word you can’t defend, You’d try to tell them it’s not your way, but your voice just does you in. Give it some time, boy, you will see, This is not the end. Give it a year, or maybe five, It won’t be more than ten. Til you’re dancing through the city like a big-time motherfucker, Just dancing through the city like a big-time motherfucker. Your granny, she may not approve, It don’t mean you don’t love her, You’re just dancing through the city like a big-time motherfucker. Little girl, would you prefer a different pronoun? Don’t worry, I won’t tell your mother now. The restroom mirror in your church, Shows the monster your preacher’s been preachin’ bout, But look even harder and you will find, Such a Noble man tryna come out. Just give it some time boy, you will see, This is not the end. You’ll get a new birthday you’ll share with me, You’ll start over again. Dancing through the city like a big-time motherfucker, You’re just dancing through the city like a big-time motherfucker. Your auntie, she may scoff at you, But you just see her in the summer, Cause you’re dancing through the city like a Breakdown And when all this time alone feels like a waste, You may be free, but your bed has one big empty space, I hear that’s when you know, That you’ve gotten to know yourself. You’ll put yourself out there, You’ll put yourself out there, (It’ll be scary but) you’ll put yourself out there, (It’ll be hard but) you can put yourself out there, You’ll put yourself out there - You’ll be dancing through the city with a big-time motherfucker, You’ll be dancing through the city with a big-time motherfucker, You’ll look in their eyes and you will find it was worth the while, Cause you're dancing through the city with a big-time motherfucker, You’re dancing through the city with a big-time motherfucker, You’re dancing through the city with a - And you dance, and you dance, and you dance...

I wanna marry Olly Alexander! Olly Alexander! Olly Alexander!
Nobody better, Olly Alexander! Olly Alexander! Olly Alexander! You tell me it’s a fantasy, You say he’ll never look at me; But he’s already liked a picture on my Instagram.
(Not to mention -) In the middle of the night he comes to me in my wildest dreams, Reveals to me years and years its seemed Life was going nowhere are history
Cause the air, it shifts, when we’re together Olly Alexander
And Me. I wanna marry Olly Alexander! Olly Alexander! Olly Alexander! I wanna marry Olly Alexander! Olly Alexander! Olly Alexander! Monogamy’s a stranger, Olly Alexander! Olly Alexander! Olly Alexander!
But not forever (or with) Olly Alexander! Olly Alexander! Olly Alexander! You tell me that he’s awful busy,
Got no time for a guy like me, But he already liked a picture on my Instagram (And don’t forget that - ) In the middle of the night he comforts me, makes me feel pretty We speak only complex poetry And our love surrounds us, somehow tangibly While the earth’s core cools when we’re together Olly Alexander He comes to me in my wildest dreams, I get on one knee,
look up at my King, Propose sweet nothings
I’ve been told may mean,
"Can I be with you, my dear, forever, Olly Alexander"? In the middle of the night we drive away, “Don’t look back,” he’ll say, He loves me so,
we're never letting go; Dreams accelerate, yet all of time stands still, Cause it’s “Clockstoppers” when we’re together
 Olly Alexander
 And me <3

(Cubicle get you down) Don't you wanna get, come over let's get Get get down, get down

You wake up, you go through it, You're somehow expected to thrive. You walk through the doors to school, There stands the fools who'll make you cry. You look around for protection, You even whisper to the sky. More time spent dodging bullets than you would care to admit why. So look at yourself in the mirror, Are you cute? Are you free? Are you stylin' head to feet? Look at yourself in the mirror. Are you dope? You break the mold? You don't do just what you're told. Rainbow Rebel! Put on a show for 'em, Don't let 'em go for a while. Change up their day for 'em, Turn all their frowns to a smile. You know they wanna be just like you, You know they're always trying to bite your style. It may not feel like it, But soon you'll be gone for a while. So look at yourself in the mirror, Are you cute? Are you free? Are you stylin' head to feet? Look at yourself in the mirror. Are you dope? You break the mold? It won't be just what you're told. Rainbow Rebel!

about

Dearest Bandcamp Followers,

Call it a silly new year's resolution but as I was going into 2019 I felt I needed to clean house; sit down, gather my thoughts; revisit what I've been doing the past five years, make a plan for the years round the bend. It dawned on me that the best of my work so far - the songs that told actual compelling stories when placed in conversation with each other - were spread out over the scope of several EPs. I became obsessed with organizing this body of work - these thoughts, emotions, dreams, and changing soundscapes - before pressing forward with anything new. So, I revisited the Johnny Darlin catalogue song-by-song, meditated on the memories I had of A) watching their demos forming into final products, B) their collaboration partners, and the moments we shared in various recording and rehearsal studios together, C) the reactions of my fellow friends and music lovers to each track, and D) the most euphoric live performances. Then, I cut the fat. I re-recorded some bits and pieces; I even chose demos over final products in some cases, something 2014 Johnny would be horrified to learn of :P

And, well, I came up with these 12, in this order, that tell the Johnny Darlin story from 2014 to 2018.

As we move further into 2019, I plan to release a ton of new material. On Bandcamp, you will always be able to find those old EPs as they were released; on streaming, this catalogue will be all that exists of these years. If you're new to my stuff, you came at the perfect time, as it seems I have put sizable brainpower into deciding this is the definitive place you should start!

Thank you all for being there for me throughout all the doubt, the creative frustration on the way, for coming to the shows and open mics night after night after night, for generally believing in me so far! This can be a lonely process generally, and it'd be an unbearably lonely one without you! You inspire me and inspired this setlist (I kept some of these songs specifically for their one fan!) I hope you enjoy this little bit of revisionist history; and I pray you stick around for what the year has in store cause nothing brings me more joy than sharing these babies!

Please drop me a line if we've never connected personally but you've enjoyed any of these songs.

I love you all so very much!
Johnny
